How to Get Rid of Vomit Smell in Carpets, Cars and Mattresses
Vomit smell lingers because the odour is trapped in fibres, foam and seams โ not just in the air. Spraying a fragrance over the top rarely fixes it. The reliable routine is to remove the source, clean the material according to its care instructions, dry it completely, ventilate, and only then use an odour eliminator as a finishing step.
1. Remove the solids, then blot
Wear gloves. Scoop up solids with a paper towel or spoon, then blot the area with a clean cloth. Blot rather than rub, because rubbing pushes the residue deeper into carpet, upholstery or mattress foam.
2. Clean according to the material
Check the care label or manufacturer's instructions first. For carpets and upholstery, a suitable carpet cleaner or enzyme-based cleaner can help break down organic residue. Test any product on a hidden patch before using it on the visible area. For mattresses, use as little moisture as possible and avoid soaking the foam.
3. Dry completely
Vomit smell often survives because the material stays damp. Blot thoroughly, then allow airflow through the room. A fan or open windows help. Do not remake a bed or put cushions back until the material is genuinely dry.
4. Ventilate the room
Open windows and doors when weather allows, and use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens. Fresh air moves the odour out; it does not just replace it with another smell.
5. Use an odour eliminator as the finishing step
Once the area is clean and dry, mist an odour eliminator lightly into the air or onto a suitable surface. Keep pets and children away while spraying, avoid food and faces, and never spray directly onto people or pets. Our car and gear odour eliminators and pet odour eliminators are designed for this kind of reset and are consciously formulated to be used around pets.
Vomit smell in the car
Remove any solids, vacuum, clean the seat and carpet according to their care instructions, and leave the windows open to dry. If the smell returns, check under mats and in seat seams. A cabin filter can also hold odour โ have it checked if the smell comes back through the vents.
When to call a professional
If the vomit has soaked into foam, the area stays damp, or the smell keeps returning, a professional carpet or upholstery cleaner may be the better next step. Fragrance should complement cleaning, not replace it.
