How to Make Your Home Smell Fresh (Without Masking Odours)
A home that smells fresh is usually not the one with the strongest fragrance. It is the one where the source of the smell has been dealt with, the air moves, and the fragrance is a finishing touch rather than a cover-up.
1. Find the source
Walk through the house and notice where the smell is strongest. Common sources include bins, nappy bins, damp towels, pet bedding, the fridge, the dishwasher, drains and shoes. Cleaning the source will do more than any spray.
2. Ventilate every day
Open windows and doors for a few minutes when weather allows. Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom. Fresh air is the simplest way to make a room feel fresher.
3. Manage moisture
Dampness is a common cause of musty smells. Dry towels and laundry promptly, wipe condensation, check for leaks, and address persistent damp or mould rather than covering it with fragrance.
4. Reset the textiles
Wash bedding, throws, cushion covers and pet bedding according to their care labels. Vacuum carpets and upholstery, including under cushions. A clean sofa smells different from a perfumed one.
5. Deal with bins and pets
Empty bins regularly, clean nappy bins, and wash pet bedding. For pet areas, use an odour eliminator in a ventilated room, away from your pet's face and bedding. Ours are consciously formulated to be used around pets.
6. Add a scent you enjoy
Once the room is clean and dry, mist a natural air freshener lightly into the air or onto a suitable surface. Start with less than you think you need. A subtle scent that fades is better than a strong one that becomes part of the furniture.
Our Australian-made odour eliminators and air fresheners are designed for this finishing step. If you are choosing between scents, the Discovery Kit is the easiest way to try five.
A simple weekly reset
Empty bins, wash towels, vacuum the main living areas, open the windows, and check the rooms that tend to hold moisture. Then add fragrance only where it is needed. That routine will make a bigger difference than an extra spray.
